Midsummer’s Eve Traditions in Stockholm

After a long Scandinavian winter, Midsummer’s Traditions in Stockholm is a three day festival during June 22-24, 2012 welcoming the longest day of the year with the most sunlight. Summer solstice is also a national holiday in Sweden.

The Midsummer Eve’s festival originates back to the old pagan celebrations of summer solstice illustrating the darkness of winter bowing to the forces of the sun god. “Midsommar” customs include Swedes decorating their homes with wreaths and flower garlands, raising and then dancing around the midsummer “May” pole, and listening to traditional folk songs.

Swedes also customarily feast on pickled herring, beer and spiced grain alcohol. Midsummer’s eve is a celebration of local food including traditional potatoes, smoked fish and fresh fruit. Young women are read their fortunes and eat Dream Porridge, hoping to connect with their future husbands. Locals often celebrate the occasion at Stockholm parks including Vasaparken and Tantolunden.
