Keep your family entertained with time-machines, butterfly houses, and tons of other activities in Stockholm for kids! This northern city has wonderful attractions for all ages.
When it comes to planning your vacation in Stockholm for kids, rest assured that you'll be visiting a kid-friendly city with plenty of appealing things to see and do. Stockholm attractions offer the familiarity of a modern city, as well as the old-world feel and appeal of a European metropolis. Kids will love the options for outdoor play, educational opportunities, and great food. Here are the top things to do in Stockholm with kids.
Getting Around
Stockholm is exceedingly kid and baby friendly. Almost every building has ramps and elevators, making trekking around with small kids or babies in strollers a breeze. Even public transportation is kid-accessible—buses are equipped and eager to lower themselves to stroller level, ensuring safety and ease of transport.
Skansen - an open-air museum
The absolute best place in Stockholm for kids is Skansen, Stockholm's famous open-air museum. The first of its kind, it offers kids a time-machine like experience, with hundreds of homes and buildings from Sweden's history, as well as paid actors who guide young ones through everyday rituals. Kids will love the time warp, as well as Skansen's zoo. The animals in the zoo are native to the Scandinavian region, and include bears, elk, moose, and wolves. There's also a small amusement park with plenty of kid-oriented rides.
Haga Park
Haga Park is another great place in Stockholm for kids—you'll find the butterfly house, which is sure to delight most kids. These greenhouses have been converted into lush tropical environments, and countless butterflies flutter around the area. Young kids find the environment especially enjoyable, and the gift shop and restaurant are also great for little ones as well.
Traveler tip: Try the restaurant's cakes. You and your children will not be disappointed.
The National Museum
The National Museum is a great place to see art, but many people wouldn't think to bring their kids there. In fact, this museum has a number of kid-friendly attractions. Take your kids to the fourth floor of the Culture House and explore the 'Room for Child.' Built like a library, it offers books and activities for newborns to 11 year olds. There's also a workshop area where, for a small fee, kids can paint pictures or take part in the day's special activity, making it one of the great hands-on attractions in Stockholm for kids. If you come during peak hours, however, expect a crowd – this place is very popular amongst families.
Junibacken
Finally, there's Junibacken, where parents and kids can live out their Pippi Longstocking dreams. Kids can play in her house, or take a fun train ride. There are also frequent performances, but they are only in Swedish.
Stockholm is extremely kid friendly, so back up your strollers and baby-bags and prepare for a trip the entire family will remember.
