Stockholm History

Stockholm is rich with medieval and Scandinavian history. Learn about some major attractions and explore Stockholm history for yourself!
The history of Stockholm, Sweden's capital, dates back to the 13th century. It was originally created as a way to block passage between Lake Malaren and the Baltic Sea, and in the 16th century it separated Denmark from Norway. It officially became the capital of Sweden a century later, and the city's focus on science led to rapid industrial development.
Stockholm continued to expand until the early 18th century, and it became a crucial cog in European trade and maritime transit. However, the Great Northern War and the bubonic plague ended Sweden's role as a major power in Europe. Interestingly, Sweden is notable for its lack of children during this time. In the late 18th century, enlightened ruler Gustav III took the reigns and restored some amount of cultural and political power to the country. For the next several centuries, Sweden grew in industry and technological advancement, making it one of the most modernized cities in the world. As its capital, Stockholm is predictably high-tech, and its economy is service-based and knowledge oriented.
All of that sounds great, but what does it mean for visitors? Stockholm and Sweden clearly have rich histories, and they are readily accessible in the city's many museums and monuments. To make it easier for you to explore Stockholm history, here are some of the best historical sites to visit.
Drottingham Palace
Located on Queens Island, Drottningham Palace is a beautiful mansion that was built in the 17th century. Today, it serves as the home to the Swedish royal family, and tours of the castle yield insight into the rich layers of Stockholm history. The gorgeous Franco-Dutch design alone is worth a visit.
Skansen Open-Air Museun
For an unparalleled glimpse into the realities of Stockholm history, make sure you stop by the Skansen Open-Air Museum. The first museum of its kind in the world, it documents what life has been like for the Swedish throughout their history, and throughout the country's different regions. Examples of houses from different periods and areas are on display throughout the museum, and actors portray what life in Sweden and Stockholm has been like for centuries.
The Swedish Royal Armoury
Finally, it's only fitting to visit the Swedish Royal Armoury, Sweden's oldest museum. Located in the basement of the Royal Palace, it was founded in 1628 by King Gustav II. Today, it shows the history of Swedish royalty with many historical items and artifacts. Highlights include the costume Gustav III wore when he was assassinated, and the uniform worn by Karl XII when he was killed in battle. There are also several royal horse-drawn coaches whose grandeur needs to be seen to be believed.
Stockholm history is long and rich—and its many museums and monuments relay this to the public. During your stay, be sure to visit some of these great attractions. When Stockholm history comes up in the next dinner party conversation, you'll give everyone an earful.
