Whether you want a taste of Swedish high-fashion or some souvenirs for your nephew, Stockholm shopping has something for you. Learn about the best places to start!
No trip to Stockholm would be complete without a day spent shopping. Stockholm shopping is a vibrant and varied scene, with options for every shopper, regardless of their budget. Here you'll find an energetic fashion world amongst Stockholm's younger fashionistas, many fun gifts for family and friends, and plenty of great value buys. During your stay, be sure not to miss out on a fun Stockholm shopping experience.
Trendy Fashion
Stockholm has an excellent reputation for its trendy fashion. If you're looking for places to see and buy the latest styles of clothes, your best bet is to head to Grev Turegatan. To get there, head to Humlegården and follow the well-dressed young people down Linnégatan street. Like many Scandinavian-designed things, the clothes you'll find here are trendy, simple, and minimalistic. You can also head to SoFo, a hip young neighborhood with many independent boutique stores.
Shopping Malls and Department Stores
If you're looking for Stockholm shopping malls and department stores, head to the city center. Birger Jarlsgatan is a street here where you'll find a variety of shopping experiences, including many exclusive stores and a shopping mall called Sturegallerian. This is an upscale mall with international designers, as well as many locally-owned stores. Two other places in the city center, Drottninggatan and Hamngatan, are high-quality department stores.
Drottninggatan, a long city street, has a department store called Åhléns. This chain of department stores can be found all over Sweden, and a trip here offers a good representation of what everyday Stockholm shopping is like for locals. Hamngatan also has a department store called NK, which is the most high-end department store in the country. NK also has a supermarket and other food stores. Be sure not to miss the pastry counter, as its Swedish desserts are exquisite. If you come to Stockholm at Christmas time, be sure to take your kids past NK's famous window displays!
Housewares and Furniture
Gotgatan, the main drag of Stockholm's old quarter, is home to Stockholm shopping stores that offer a wide variety of goods. You'll find housewares, furniture, and even spices here, all with signature Swedish design. Clothing designers themselves come to this street to shop for new fabrics, so hang around and rub elbows with the people you see haggling over a piece of fabric—they may have designed the dress you bought earlier in the day. A trip to Gotgatan is highly recommended for anyone who wants to stray from the beaten tourist path and see the behind-the-scenes world of Stockholm shopping.
Vintage Stores
If you'd like to look great without paying too much, definitely peruse one (or more!) of Stockholm's many second hand vintage stores. Stockholm's trendsetters flock to these stores, but they manage to keep a consistently full stock of clothes, and their prices are far lower than similar stores in other major European cities.
IKEA
Finally, for the tourist in all of us, no trip to Stockholm would be complete without at least a picture or two inside IKEA. There is a free bus available from Central Station that will take you to the flagship IKEA (opened in 1965), located in the suburb of Skärholmen.
Stockholm shopping offers a multitude of options—from clothing to pots, pans, and other household wares—and all of them have a distinctly Scandinavian feel. Whatever you buy, it's sure to include the sleek, minimalistic elements for which the Swedish are known.
